What is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal, using a precise application of heat or sodium hydroxide to target the follicle at the source and permanently stop hair growth. Safe for all skin tones and effective on all hair types including blonde, red, grey, and white hairs that laser treatments often cannot treat electrolysis offers a truly inclusive, results-driven approach to smooth, healthy skin.

The Three Modalities of Electrolysis

Electrolysis is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. Different modalities allow treatments to be customized based on the hair type, skin condition, follicle structure, and treatment area — creating a more precise and comfortable experience.

Thermolysis

Thermolysis uses a gentle high-frequency current to create heat within the follicle, targeting the hair at its source. Known for its speed, efficiency, and comfort, thermolysis is the most commonly used modality in modern electrolysis and is ideal for treating larger areas and finer hair growth.

Galvanic

Galvanic is the original form of electrolysis, using a direct electrical current to create a natural chemical reaction within the follicle that permanently destroys the hair root. While slower than other modalities, it can be highly effective for certain hair and follicle types.

Blend

Blend combines both thermolysis and galvanic currents in a single treatment. By pairing heat with the chemical reaction created through galvanic current, the blend method can be especially beneficial for distorted or stubborn follicles and more resistant hair growth.

Our Approach at why•skn

At why•skn, treatment is never approached with a “one method fits all” mindset. The most important factor in successful electrolysis is not simply the modality used, but the skill, precision, and judgment of the electrologist performing the treatment. Every treatment plan is thoughtfully tailored to your skin, hair, comfort level, and long-term goals to deliver safe, effective, and lasting results.
